Sumit Sharma, MD is an academic vitreoretinal surgeon and uveitis specialist with specific research interests in ocular imaging. He graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University and then went to medical school at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Sharma then completed a residency in ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic where he was awarded the Resident Research Award in multiple years and the Grand Rounds award. Dr. Sharma then completed a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Duke University where he was awarded the Heed Fellowship award and the prestigious Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award given to the top vitreoretinal surgical fellows in the country. He then completed a uveitis fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK prior to joining the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in 2016. His research focus is on novel imaging techniques and their use in ophthalmology as well as clinical trials in both retina and uveitis. He has served as an investigator in over 80 clinical trials in all phases of development, published 90 peer reviewed articles and many book chapters and instructional courses. Dr. Sharma also serves as the Medical Director in the Information Technology Division for Ophthalmology, as the Uveitis Fellowship Director and the medical student clerkship director.
